Description
Gustave Doré was born in 1832 in Strasbourg, France. His first story illustrations were published when he was only 15 years old. Doré went on to illustrate many works from Rabelais, Balzac Milton and Byron. He is probably best known for his illustrations for the English Bible, Cervantes’s Don Quixote and Dante’s Divine Comedy, depicting Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Other notable works from this prolific artist include ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen’ and Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven’. His detailed and often dramatic style is still popular and often copied today.
